Routledge Time Line

Here is a Routledge time line check list to help establish the probable date of publication of Routledge book that lacks a date on the title page. My George Routledge Publisher page gives a fuller account of how to approach this issue. The key things to look at are the form of the business name, the London address, New York addresses, other offices, and the presence of the Routledge colophon. The brackets indicate that the street address number is sometimes not printed. In all of these formats from 1836 to 1890, the word LONDON appears in capitals on the line before the publisher’s name.

From 1890 onward, the company name appears as George Routledge and Sons Limited. This will be abbreviated as GRSL. Note that from 1896 to 1902, there is considerable variability in the use of the different forms of the address.

  • 1890-1892 London: GRSL, Broadway, Ludgate Hill; Glasgow Manchester and New York
  • 1892-1897 London: GRSL, Broadway, Ludgate Hill; Manchester and New York
  • 1896-1902 London: GRSL, Broadway, Ludgate Hill
  • 1898 London and New York GRSL, Broadway, Ludgate Hill
  • 1899-1902 London: GRSL, Broadway House, Ludgate Hill

In 1903, the use of the Routledge colophon was introduced. It was in regular but not exclusive use until 1923. It appears between the author’s name and the publishers address. Also in 1903, the relationship with E.P. Dutton and Co. of New York began. From 1903 to 1925, the “and” in both publisher’s names is sometimes printed “&“. The publisher’s names are normally printed in black, but occasionally, one or both names can be printed in red. Title pages from 1903 to 1912 follow one of the following four patterns:

  • 1903-1912 Four variants:
    • Colophon; London GRSL, Broadway House, Ludgate Hill.
    • (No colophon) London, GRSL, Broadway House, Ludgate Hill.
    • Colophon; London GRSL, New York E.P. Dutton and Co
    • (No colophon); London GRSL, New York E.P. Dutton and Co

I have also seen title pages in 1907 and 1908 with the following address format.

  • 1907-1908 London GRSL, Carter Lane, Ludgate Hill.

From 1913 to 1925, the following four variants are found:

  • 1913-1925 Four variants:
    • Colophon; London GRSL, Broadway House, 68-74 Carter Lane,E.C.
    • (No colophon) London, GRSL, Broadway House, 68-74 Carter Lane,E.C.
    • Colophon; London GRSL, New York E.P. Dutton and Co
    • (No colophon); London GRSL, New York E.P. Dutton and Co
  • I have not investigated the appearance of Routledge title pages after 1925, but note that in 1947, the imprint became Routledge & Kegan Paul.
